There’s a part of leadership no one prepares you for: holding it together when your world is coming apart.
A few years ago, I led a high-performing team, juggled executive demands, and drove critical projects. On the outside, I was calm and composed. On the inside, I was navigating an intense personal storm—caring for a loved one through a medical crisis.
I couldn’t ignore it. I couldn’t compartmentalize it away. What I could do was show up differently.
I let my team know I was going through something. I didn’t overshare—but I was honest. I gave them the space to rise. I invited them to lead. I learned to receive support while still offering it. I also found that vulnerability, when paired with clarity and purpose, builds more trust than always having the answers.
We delivered on every key project that quarter. But more than that, we became a stronger team—more empathetic, resilient, and honest.
Leadership isn’t about being unshakable. It’s about being human, especially when it counts most.
If you’re navigating your own push-pull—between personal challenges and professional responsibility—remember:
- You don’t have to do it alone.
- You can lead with strength and softness.
- And sometimes, the storm itself shapes you into the leader you were meant to become.
Want to create a culture where people can show up fully and grow through a challenge—not despite it? Let’s talk.
