1. When Feedback Isn’t Just About You
Feedback can sting—but it can also open a door. One of the most transformative lessons I’ve learned as a leader, psychologist, and human being is that feedback is often less about judgment and more about what someone else needs to express, understand, or feel heard about.
Sometimes, feedback reveals more about the environment than it does about us. It shows us where people feel safe—or where they don’t. It invites us to tune into what’s behind the words. Are they asking to be seen? Hoping for acknowledgment? Navigating something we can’t yet see?
It’s not always easy to hear tough feedback, especially when you’re doing your best. But part of growing as a leader means letting go of the need to be right or perfect and embracing the courage to listen—really listen.
When I began shifting my mindset—seeing feedback not as a personal critique but as a conversation starter—I noticed something powerful. My teams grew more engaged. Conversations deepened. Trust increased. Why? Because feedback, received well, is a signal: “I value your perspective.” It says, “I care enough to listen, even if it’s uncomfortable.”
The truth is that not all feedback is accurate or fair. But all of it is information. It tells us how others are experiencing our leadership, our words, or our culture. It’s a window into what matters to them. And even when we disagree, we can still validate the experience. We can say, “Thank you for sharing that—I want to understand more.”
So, what if, next time you receive feedback, you pause before defending yourself? What if you make space to reflect, ask questions, and listen beneath the words?
You don’t need to agree with every comment—but you can honor every voice.
